Postdoctoral Fellow - Synthetic Biology Design and Evolution

European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)an international, innovative, and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1800 employees from many nations is offering a fellowship. The Steinmetz group at EMBL  is looking for an ambitious computational postdoctoral fellow who will combine innovative approaches in synthetic biology, laboratory evolution, and genomics to measure the functional and molecular consequences of abrupt changes in genome organization. The evolutionary synthetic biology team in the Steinmetz lab uses the world’s first fully-synthetic eukaryote, Saccharomyces cerevisiae 2.0, and an on-demand genome-wide recombination system engineered into its genome (SCRaMbLE) to discover principles of genome design within an evolutionary context. The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for processing and analyzing data generated from high-throughput genomics and experimental evolution experiments. S/he will join a highly collaborative, diverse, and international team. A successful candidate will be highly motivated, creative and well-positioned to lead a scientific projects at all stages, from experimental design to manuscript preparation. In addition, this person will be both independent and enthusiastic to work collaboratively within a team.
Eligibility

  • PhD in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Synthetic Biology or related field
  • Proficiency in a scripting language, e.g. R or Python
  • Experience with workflow management systems (e.g. Snakemake) and cluster computing environments (e.g. SLURM) are highly desired
  • Basic statistical knowledge
  • High-level English communication skills
  • Experience with workflow management systems (e.g. Snakemake) and cluster computing environments (e.g. SLURM) are highly desired
  • Previous experience analyzing data from 3rd generation sequencing technologies, experimental evolution, and/or high-throughput phenotyping are highly desired

The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits, as well as financial support for relocation and installation, including your family and the availability of an excellent child care facility on campus
