Dissertation Award in Statistical and Nonlinear Physics

This award recognizes exceptional young scientists who have performed original doctoral thesis work of outstanding scientific quality in the area of statistical and nonlinear physics. This annual award consists of $2,000, a certificate, travel reimbursement (up to $750 for North America, $1,500 overseas), and a registration waiver to receive the award and give an invited talk at the APS March Meeting. The invited talk will be held in the GSNP Award Session, which also hosts presentations associated with the Student and Postdoctoral Speaker Awards. There will be one awardee each year. The awardee is expected to attend the corresponding APS March Meeting.

Eligibility

Most unit awards do require APS membership and unit affiliation.
  • Anyone except a member of the committee making the selection may submit one nomination or seconding letter for each prize or award in any given year.
  • Self-nominations are not accepted, except for the Prize for Industrial Applications of Physics, and most Lectureships and Fellowship Awards.

  • A nominee does not have to be an APS member, except for the Justin Jankunas Doctoral Dissertation Award in Chemical Physics, the Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award in Astrophysics, Deborah Jin Award for Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Research in Atomic, Molecular, or Optical Physics require APS membership and unit affiliation (as do most unit awards).
  • Emphasis should generally be on the nominee’s recent work.
  • Most nominees are individuals, but in some cases, teams may be nominated, especially collaborations involving more than one institution. When considering nominating a team, only nominate the primary members who have made original and indispensable contributions. Click for more details.
